Background Noise

The world doesn’t get quieter. You just get better at choosing what reaches you.

Three white herons crowd the space beside her, necks twisting and beaks open mid-call, all restless motion and opinion. She doesn’t chase them, and she doesn’t shut them out. She simply lets them become what they are: background noise. Her gaze drifts calmly past them, lids heavy and lips composed, grounded in something the birds can’t touch.

The texture carries the story. Her coral hood and turtleneck are built in thick sculpted plaster, the hood curling to a point like a bud about to open, the collar combed into tight ribs that read like knit. The herons are layered in rough white plaster, their heads finished in fine pastel detail with sharp, watchful eyes. Against the smoky dark ground, the two halves of the piece pull against each other: her stillness on one side, their noise on the other.

It’s a portrait of the strength it takes to stay centered in a busy life, and a reminder that freedom is never far, sometimes only a wingbeat away.
